A stable yet evolving transition index

The 2024 Transition Index reaches 33 (vs. 32.4 in 2023). Although relatively stable, the study reveals that the most advanced companies continue to progress, while the proportion of Unconcerned companies is decreasing.

Expertise as a key lever

The presence of environmental expertise, whether internal or external, is the most important determining factor in explaining the implementation of climate action. Companies that report having such expertise have an average Index of 59.3, compared with 24.8 for those that do not.

Measurement of GHG emissions

Although the proportion of companies measuring their GHG emissions remains stable at 20% (vs 21%), a significant increase is observed in the measurement of indirect emissions (scope 3): 54% of companies measuring their emissions include scope 3, compared to 39% in 2023.

Triggers of climate actions

Among the companies that have implemented at least one climate action: 40% identify cost reduction as the main driver. 36% mention climate concerns of employees and managers.

Our recommendations 2024

Take inspiration from tried and tested examples at local, national and international levels: consult the sustainability reports of major contractors; explore sectoral and regional initiatives, and seek expert advice to identify significant sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as the most cost-effective and relevant actions to reduce them.

Measure and improve energy productivity: Increase the economic returns of each unit of energy consumed, analyze energy needs, and optimize equipment as well as industrial processes.

Promote circularity and sustainability: Integrate circular practices at all stages of the life cycle. Opt for recycled materials, adopt eco-design approaches, and participate in equipment sharing initiatives. Engage in industrial symbiosis to exchange resources and optimize the use of raw materials. Design or market durable, repairable products that meet essential needs while ensuring a long lifespan. Reduce single-use products, optimize waste management, and limit and eliminate landfilling.

Optimize transport: reduce distances traveled, group needs, pool transport, electrify your fleets and train your teams in eco-driving.

Leverage internal and external experts, including your stakeholders (clients, suppliers, competitors, industry associations). Ideally, appoint a dedicated leader for sustainability.
Make sure to rely on reliable, complete, and comparable GHG data to guide your strategic decisions and prioritize your climate actions.
Avoid greenwashing by ensuring that environmental statements are fair and provided transparently.
Integrate climate issues and the transition to a low-carbon economy into employee training and monitoring mechanisms.
Involve management to integrate climate risks and business opportunities from the transition into strategic, operational decisions and the evolution of the business model.
Strengthen climate governance at all levels: policies, procurement, and board of directors, where applicable.
Raise awareness and mobilize managers and employees so that their daily decisions contribute to placing the company on a plausible transition pathway.
Avoid ecosilence (greenhushing)! Share your transition story to inspire other entrepreneurs, establish a constructive dialogue, and accelerate the transition in your value chain, your industry, and your region.
Support your suppliers and customers to maximize the collective impact on GHG reduction and respond to the rapidly changing regulatory and customer environment.
Collaborate with other businesses and stakeholders, including your competitors, to strengthen a transition ecosystem in a spirit of ‘co-opetition’ (cooperation among competitors).

FAQs

What is the methodological approach of the barometer?

As part of this study, a web survey was conducted with a representative sample of business leaders located in Quebec. The respondents were randomly selected through Léger's web panel, the largest representative panel of Quebec businesses in Canada. This panel ensures a high representativeness of the studied population.

The study gathered responses from 806 company directors in Quebec. The companies covered in the sample come from all sectors of activity, with the exception of the "public administration" sector. The sample is also representative of company size and regional distribution in Quebec.

Results were weighted by number of employees, region and industry to ensure a representative sample of the study population, based on the latest Statistics Canada census.
